Albuquerque, NM – Residents across New Mexico and the broader Southwest should prepare for periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center (WPC). The agency issued an “Excessive Rainfall Outlook,” highlighting a marginal risk for flash flooding across central and eastern New Mexico and parts of Arizona.

According to the WPC, showers and thunderstorms will persist through midweek as tropical moisture from the East Pacific pushes into the region. While most areas are expected to see less than an inch of rainfall each day, isolated flash flooding remains possible in areas of repeated storms or poor drainage.

The rainfall threat is forecast to increase later in the week and into the weekend as the tropical feed strengthens, potentially bringing more widespread precipitation. Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts, avoid flooded roadways, and stay alert for weather alerts.

NOAA officials remind drivers: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Even shallow floodwaters can sweep away vehicles or block emergency access routes.
