Midland, TX – A widespread dust storm is impacting much of West Texas and parts of New Mexico today, with hazardous driving conditions expected through the evening. According to the National Weather Service, a blowing dust advisory is in effect from noon MDT to 9 PM MDT, covering areas including Midland, Odessa, and surrounding counties. Wind gusts of up to 55 mph are expected, potentially reducing visibility to near zero, especially in rural and open areas.
The advisory also includes a wind advisory from 9 AM MDT until 9 PM MDT, with sustained winds between 25 and 35 mph, and gusts reaching up to 55 mph. These gusts could blow around unsecured objects and cause power outages. Travelers in the region are advised to exercise caution, particularly high-profile vehicles, such as trucks and RVs.
Residents with respiratory issues should remain indoors to avoid the dust, and drivers are urged to pull over if visibility drops suddenly. The storm’s impact is expected to worsen throughout the day, making travel dangerous in many areas. Authorities advise following the “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” guidance when encountering low visibility on the road.
The storm is also affecting parts of southeastern New Mexico, with similar wind and dust conditions expected until late evening.
