Aurora, Ill. — The newest Community Voices exhibit at the Aurora Public Library will celebrate African American Heritage. The exhibit shares the personal stories of African Americans who live in Aurora.

There will be an in-person event on Thursday, June 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Aurora Public Library. Participants in the exhibit will be present to share about themes that came out in the exhibit. The library will serve appetizers and refreshments while they last.

The Community Voices project is an initiative created by the Aurora library to share the stories of individuals within the community. According to the library website, the goal of the exhibits is to “celebrate diverse experiences, foster connections, cultivate empathy, and nurture a sense of belonging at the library.”

Submissions are prompted by questions about how the individual takes pride in their heritage or what they wish the community knew more about their heritage or identity. The submissions are made through interviews with library staff. The responses to these interviews are formatted on a poster and displayed at Aurora Public Library District locations along with photos. Submissions for the African American Heritage exhibit were open from February 1 through March 31. The exhibit will be open through the month of June.
