New Lenox, Illinois — Wednesday — Residents will have an opportunity to learn severe weather safety during a public seminar hosted with National Weather Service meteorologists next month.

According to the Village of New Lenox, the event titled “Beyond the Warning: A Look at Weather Forecasting and Preparedness” will be held Tuesday, April 21 at Lincoln-Way West High School.

The evening will feature an interactive weather preparedness training led by meteorologists from the National Weather Service Chicago office, along with a community safety event.

Organizers say the program will explain how thunderstorms form, what causes severe weather, and how residents can prepare their homes and families for storms.

Participants will also learn how to read and interpret weather radar, along with a step-by-step walkthrough of a real-world forecasting scenario and a behind-the-scenes look at how meteorologists develop forecasts.

The event schedule includes:

  • 5–7 p.m. — Health and Safety Expo
  • 5–7 p.m. — Touch-A-Truck event
  • 7–9 p.m. — Severe Weather Preparedness Training

The seminar will take place in the Lincoln-Way West High School auditorium, with entry through the Cougar Road auditorium entrance, officials said.

Organizers say the event is free to attend, but registration is required due to limited seating.

Officials say the training is designed for weather enthusiasts, families, students ages 12 and older, and residents interested in improving storm preparedness.

With severe weather season approaching in Illinois, the program aims to help residents better understand warnings and make faster decisions during dangerous storms.

For students and young residents interested in meteorology or emergency management, the seminar also provides insight into how professional forecasters analyze and predict severe weather.
