New Lenox, Illinois – Drivers across eastern Will County should prepare for slick roads and rapidly changing conditions as lake-effect snow moves through the area in multiple waves, creating localized but potentially disruptive accumulations through Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for eastern Will County with two distinct periods of accumulating lake-effect snow. The first round is expected Friday evening through midnight, followed by a second and potentially more impactful round from Saturday morning through 4 p.m. Snow totals could locally exceed 4 inches, especially closer to the Indiana state line.

The lake-effect band is expected to shift east into Indiana overnight before sliding back west into northeastern Illinois by Saturday morning. This movement could lead to sharp contrasts in conditions over short distances, with bursts of heavier snow and reduced visibility affecting parts of New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort, and nearby communities.

Local officials urge drivers to slow down and allow extra travel time, especially on untreated roads and during periods of heavier snow. Visibility may drop quickly within snow bands, increasing the risk of accidents. Illinois road conditions can be checked through the state’s transportation resources before heading out.

The advisory remains in place until Saturday afternoon, and additional updates may be issued if snow bands intensify or shift farther west.
