New Lenox, IL – A 27-year-old Chicago man has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery earlier this week at an AT&T store in New Lenox.
According to the New Lenox Police Department, officers responded around 5:37 p.m. Monday to the store located at 701 E. Lincoln Highway. Police said two men wearing masks, gloves and construction clothing entered the business. One of the men allegedly brandished a handgun and ordered an employee to open the store safe.
When the employee could not immediately access the safe, the suspect allegedly struck him on the head with the firearm, causing minor injuries. Police said the men then fled the store without taking any property.
Detectives obtained video footage of the suspects’ vehicle, which was later tracked to a residence in Chicago. There, investigators identified and arrested Virgil Holland, who allegedly matched the description of one of the armed suspects and was reportedly wearing the same pants and boots seen in security video.
Police said additional evidence, including video of Holland purchasing gloves before the incident, further linked him to the attempted robbery. Holland was charged with attempted armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated unlawful restraint, and aggravated battery. He is being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility pending a pre-trial detention hearing.
New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said in a statement the incident reflects ongoing challenges with repeat offenders, adding he was thankful the case will be prosecuted in Will County.
The investigation into the second suspect is ongoing.
