Shamong, N.J. – A fast-moving wildfire is forcing road and trail closures in Wharton State Forest as crews battle the Mines Spung Wildfire in Shamong Township, Burlington County.

According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the wildfire ignited near the Carranza Memorial and is prompting a full emergency response. Local forest roads, including Tuckerton Road and Bulldozer Road, are closed to the public. The Batona Trail is also shut down between Carranza Road and Bulldozer Road.

Officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid the area as fire crews work to contain the blaze. There is no estimate yet on acreage or containment, and updates are expected throughout the day.

This section of Wharton State Forest includes dense pine barrens and remote forest access points, increasing fire spread risks during dry June conditions. Authorities have not issued evacuations but are monitoring nearby structures and critical infrastructure.

Drivers should seek alternate routes and avoid recreational travel in the forest. Those living near Shamong and Tabernacle should remain alert in case additional alerts are issued.

The Forest Fire Service reminds the public that wildfires over 100 acres are classified as “major.” This remains an active scene with limited access.
