TRENTON, N.J. — As shoppers crowd New Jersey malls and downtown centers this Black Friday, state police are urging residents to stay alert and protect their belongings.

The New Jersey State Police released a set of safety reminders aimed at reducing thefts and scams during the holiday shopping rush. The guidance highlights five key steps to keep shoppers safe in stores, parking lots and online.

Stay alert and aware. Shoppers are advised to be mindful of their surroundings, avoid distractions such as texting while walking and park in well-lit areas whenever possible.

Protect your purchases. Officials recommend locking vehicles, placing bags in trunks instead of seats and keeping wallets or purses close to the body.

Be cautious with personal information. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for financial transactions and stick to reputable retailers using secure “https://” connections.

Limit the use of cash. Credit or debit cards are safer than carrying large sums of money, police said, and cash should be divided and stored separately.

Report suspicious activity. Anyone who sees unusual behavior, unattended bags or attempted thefts should notify store security or local law enforcement immediately.

The agency’s safety push comes as national retailers anticipate record crowds and heavier traffic through the weekend. Police encourage residents to stay vigilant and enjoy the season safely.
