Providence, R.I. – Strong thunderstorms are moving into Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Delaware, triggering a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. Friday that threatens to snarl traffic, down trees, and knock out power for thousands. Residents should brace for damaging winds, hail, and torrential downpours through the evening rush.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch (WS 542) covers all five counties in Rhode Island, the entire state of Delaware (New Castle County), and every county in New Jersey from Atlantic City up through Newark and the Jersey suburbs. Gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible in these areas, with heavy rain increasing flash flooding risks on major roads like I-95, Garden State Parkway, and Route 1.

In New Jersey, cities including Camden, Jersey City, and Edison face the greatest risk for downed wires and falling branches. New Castle County, Delaware, may see rapid ponding on highways and neighborhood streets, while Rhode Island’s Providence and Warwick could experience isolated outages and waterlogged intersections. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and charge devices before storms hit. Those planning evening commutes should expect delays and closely monitor local alerts.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect through 9 p.m., with more advisories possible if storms persist or strengthen. Stay tuned for further updates as weather conditions evolve across the region.
