Trenton, N.J. – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail are expected across much of New Jersey through 9 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a weather watch covering 16 counties from Cape May to Sussex.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 481 includes counties such as Camden, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Hunterdon. Residents could see wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and isolated hail as storms move rapidly across the state this afternoon and evening.

Major roadways, including the New Jersey Turnpike, I-295, and Garden State Parkway, may experience sudden visibility drops and hazardous driving conditions. Commuters are urged to delay travel if possible and secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in strong winds.

Power outages are possible, especially in wooded suburban areas like Somerset and Warren counties. Residents should charge devices and monitor local alerts for any upgrades to warnings. While flooding isn’t the primary concern, urban areas with poor drainage could see brief street flooding under heavier downpours.

The storm threat continues into early evening, with another round of scattered storms possible later tonight. Watches remain in effect until 9 p.m., and further advisories may be issued if conditions escalate.
