Newark, N.J. – A dangerous heat wave will grip northern New Jersey on Friday, with heat index values soaring as high as 107° between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., triggering an Extreme Heat Warning across Hudson, Bergen, Essex, Union, and Passaic counties.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures could make outdoor conditions hazardous, especially for seniors, outdoor workers, and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Local officials urge residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, wear lightweight clothing, and stay hydrated. Cooling centers are expected to open across Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson, with residents encouraged to check local resources for locations and hours.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises frequent shaded breaks for those working outside. Heat stroke remains a life-threatening emergency — symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness, and a body temperature above 103°. Call 911 immediately if symptoms appear.

This marks the second major heat event of the summer for the region. While the warning ends at 8 p.m. Friday, high temperatures may persist into the weekend, continuing risk for those in overheated homes or without cooling options.

🚨 Warnings remain in effect through Friday evening. Another update is expected early Friday morning.
