New Brunswick, New Jersey – Late-night travel across central New Jersey could turn hazardous within hours as freezing rain arrives by 9 p.m., creating slick roads, bridges, and sidewalks during the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 2 a.m. Wednesday for Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Western Monmouth, and Eastern Monmouth counties. A light glaze of ice is expected as rain freezes on contact with colder surfaces.

The highest risk window centers on the late evening and just after midnight, when temperatures hover near freezing. Elevated surfaces such as bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways are likely to ice over first. Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly in and around New Brunswick, Flemington, Somerville, Freehold, and coastal areas near Sandy Hook.

State and local road crews are expected to monitor conditions, but drivers are urged to reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory window. Pedestrians should use caution on steps, sidewalks, and driveways, which may appear wet but be coated in ice.

Conditions are expected to improve after 2 a.m. Wednesday as temperatures edge upward, though isolated slick spots could linger into the early morning commute. Additional advisories may be issued if freezing rain becomes more widespread.
