Paterson, N.J. – Heavy rain is pounding northern New Jersey, shutting down roads and threatening neighborhoods from Bergen to Essex counties Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Upton, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for central Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and eastern Passaic counties until 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Thunderstorms are unleashing rain at rates up to 2.5 inches per hour, with radar showing 1 to 2 inches already fallen and as much as 4 additional inches possible before the storm moves out. Flash flooding is underway and will continue to intensify across the warned area.

Drivers and residents in Paterson, Passaic, Wayne, Hackensack, and Bloomfield should expect flooded roads, overwhelmed storm drains, and rapid rises in small creeks and streams. Major arteries—including Route 17, Route 4, the Garden State Parkway, and local underpasses—are especially prone to closures. Urban neighborhoods, low-lying intersections, and poor drainage spots may become impassable within minutes.

Stay off flooded roads, especially after 3 p.m., and do not attempt to drive through standing water. Charge devices, secure valuables in basements, and be prepared to move to higher ground if needed. This event is similar to the July 2021 flash floods that stranded dozens of vehicles and caused power outages across North Jersey.

Flash Flood Warnings remain active through 5:30 p.m., with further advisories possible as storms redevelop into Thursday night.
