Newark, New Jersey – A powerful Arctic blast is set to bring dangerously cold conditions across New Jersey starting Friday, with biting winds and bitter temperatures creating a life-threatening situation that could persist through the weekend and into early next week. While widespread heavy snow is not expected statewide, the combination of cold, wind, and occasional snow squalls will make conditions hazardous across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could reach or exceed 45 to 50 mph at times, especially Friday night through Sunday. Those winds will drive wind chills well below zero across northern and central New Jersey, with the coldest conditions felt overnight and during early morning hours. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes during peak cold and wind.
Snow showers and brief squalls are possible as Arctic air pours in, particularly late Friday into Saturday. Even minor snow accumulations could create slick spots on roads, bridges, and overpasses, especially during periods of reduced visibility caused by blowing snow. Travel disruptions are most likely during overnight and early morning hours.
The prolonged cold poses a serious risk to homes and infrastructure. Residents are urged to wrap exposed pipes, open cabinet doors, and allow faucets to drip to prevent frozen plumbing. Strong winds may also lead to isolated power outages, making it important to charge devices and have backup heat sources ready. Pets should be brought indoors, and outdoor exposure should be kept to a minimum.
The coldest stretch is expected through the weekend, with only gradual improvement possible early next week. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve, and officials stress taking this Arctic outbreak seriously and preparing now.
