Philadelphia, Pa. – Coastal flooding and dangerous surf remain a serious threat for New Jersey, Delaware, and the greater Philadelphia region through Saturday morning as Hurricane Erin lingers offshore. Drivers and beachgoers could face significant hazards, including flooded roadways and life-threatening rip currents.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, widespread minor to moderate coastal flooding is expected along the New Jersey and Delaware coasts, as well as the tidal Delaware River. The greatest impacts will occur with this evening’s high tide, bringing water onto roads, into neighborhoods near back bays, and across low-lying areas. Advisories stretch from Sandy Hook to Cape May, and from Wilmington to Bethany Beach, Del.

Seas over the open water will reach 8 to 12 feet Friday, with surf zones seeing 6- to 8-foot waves. By Saturday, waves will ease slightly to 3 to 5 feet, but the risk of dangerous rip currents remains high through the weekend. Officials warn swimmers to stay out of the ocean, as conditions are considered life-threatening.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor updates from local emergency management. Coastal flood warnings and advisories remain in effect until Saturday morning, and further statements may be issued if conditions worsen.
