West Trenton, N.J. – With thousands of New Jersey residents and visitors expected to travel and gather for the Labor Day holiday, state police announced Friday that more than 140 additional troopers will be deployed to help prevent crashes and keep roadways safe.

According to the New Jersey State Police, the increased patrols will run from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. Troopers will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations and DWI enforcement. Patrols will be in addition to regularly scheduled operations across the state.

Marine Services Bureau officers will also boost patrols on waterways, checking for impaired operators and ensuring proper licensing of personal watercraft and boats. Officials reminded residents that reckless or unsafe boating can have fatal consequences.

Authorities cited 2024 statistics showing that four of the eight fatal crashes during last year’s Labor Day weekend in New Jersey involved alcohol or drug impairment. “These are preventable tragedies,” officials stated. Drivers are urged to use rideshare services, taxis or designated drivers if they plan to drink.

“We have over 140 additional troopers on patrol this Labor Day weekend as part of our ongoing effort to keep families and communities safe, but we cannot do it alone,” said Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “Every driver has the power to make responsible choices behind the wheel. Even one fatality is one too many.”

State police are encouraging motorists and boaters to plan ahead, stay sober, and exercise caution during the busy holiday weekend. Officials said the increased presence is aimed at reducing fatalities and ensuring a safe end to the summer season.
