Trenton, N.J. – Thunderstorms packing damaging winds and hail could sweep across much of New Jersey Friday afternoon, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 14 counties until 5 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch—issued at 10:05 a.m. EDT—covers counties from Warren and Somerset down through Cape May and Atlantic, impacting both inland towns and coastal areas. The main threats include wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington counties are among the population centers in the alert zone, with storms expected to develop and intensify quickly. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain indoors during storms, and stay tuned to local alerts. Power outages and tree damage are possible, especially in older neighborhoods with overhead lines.
Shore towns like Ocean City and Long Branch should also prepare for sudden downpours and lightning. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads and reduce speeds during heavy rain.
This watch remains in effect until 5 p.m. Friday, with additional warnings possible as the storm system progresses eastward.
