Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia metro area and surrounding parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware are heading “straight into the freezer” tonight, as frigid air and gusty northwest winds combine to produce dangerous wind chills through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the teens by early Monday, while northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph drive wind chill values into the single digits to near zero across much of the region. In the southern Poconos, wind chills could plunge as low as -15 degrees.

The coldest apparent temperatures are expected overnight into the Monday morning commute, increasing the risk of icy spots on roads, bridges, sidewalks, and overpasses, especially where moisture remains from recent precipitation. Officials urge drivers and pedestrians to remain alert for black ice, which can be difficult to see.

The cold impacts stretch across eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and northern Delaware, including Philadelphia, Trenton, Allentown, Reading, Wilmington, Atlantic City, and surrounding communities.

Despite some sunshine Monday, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing all day, with afternoon highs only reaching the upper 20s to low 30s. Wind chills will struggle to climb out of the teens, even during the warmest part of the day.

The National Weather Service recommends dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring pets are brought inside. Residents are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and make sure vehicles are winter-ready.

Cold conditions are expected to ease gradually later in the week.
