Newark, N.J. – Streets from Newark to White Plains could see flash flooding overnight as a slow-moving rainstorm dumps up to 3 inches of rain across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday for northeast New Jersey and southeastern New York, including Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Westchester, and Rockland counties. Rainfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour during the heaviest bursts between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Low-lying roads, underpasses, and urban drainage zones are especially vulnerable to flooding. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roadways, particularly in areas with a history of flash flooding like Route 17 in Bergen County and Route 59 in Rockland.

Residents are encouraged to secure basement belongings, check sump pumps, and stay alert for potential Flood Warnings overnight. Rapid rises in streams and poor-drainage flooding are possible even after the rain subsides.

Rain should taper off by mid-morning, but additional alerts may be issued if localized flooding persists into Saturday afternoon.
