Trenton, N.J. – Flash flooding could disrupt travel across northern and central New Jersey Wednesday evening as strong thunderstorms dump up to two inches of rain in just a few hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday through early Thursday for Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon counties. Thunderstorms are expected to bring intense rainfall rates, potentially overwhelming local drainage systems and causing creeks and streams to rapidly rise.

Urban areas like New Brunswick, Trenton, and Morristown may see flooded intersections, while rural and hilly regions in Sussex and Warren could face flash flooding in valleys and along smaller tributaries. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to cross barricades. Commuters should plan alternate routes and monitor real-time traffic alerts from NJDOT and local emergency management.

This is the second round of storms to impact the region this week, compounding saturated ground conditions. Residents should secure belongings in flood-prone basements, charge mobile devices, and stay alert for possible Flash Flood Warnings later today.

More storms are possible Thursday, and additional advisories could be issued.
