WILMINGTON, Del. – A strong coastal storm is expected to drench Delaware and southern New Jersey through Columbus Day, pushing tides well above normal and flooding low-lying roads along Delaware Bay and the tidal Delaware River. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Coastal Flood Warning through 9 p.m. Monday, with water levels up to two feet above ground in vulnerable areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of high astronomical tides and strong onshore winds will cause widespread roadway flooding from Sunday morning through late Monday. Portions of Delaware Route 9, U.S. 13, and I-295 near tidal creeks could become impassable during peak tides. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, noting that even shallow water can stall vehicles and conceal washouts.

Rain and gusty northeast winds up to 35 mph will make for a soggy holiday weekend, especially for beachgoers and pumpkin patch visitors. Moderate coastal flooding is expected near Reedy Point and along Delaware Bay, with waves topping bulkheads during high tide. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and monitor local alerts for any updated flood advisories.

Drier air moves in by Tuesday with a noticeable warmup by midweek, offering clearer skies for fall activities and leaf viewing.
