FREEHOLD, N.J. – A strong coastal system is driving powerful northeast winds across southern and central New Jersey and parts of Delaware today, with gusts up to 50 mph expected through early Monday. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has continued a Wind Advisory until 6 a.m. Monday for Inland Sussex County in Delaware and several coastal and inland New Jersey counties, including Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Burlington.
According to the NWS Mount Holly office, sustained northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will strengthen through midday Sunday, with the strongest gusts developing this evening and continuing overnight. The combination of saturated ground and strong gusts could lead to scattered tree damage and isolated power outages across Freehold, Hammonton, Jackson, and coastal communities from Long Beach Island to Atlantic City.
Forecasters caution that travel may be hazardous for high-profile vehicles on the Garden State Parkway, Route 9, and the Atlantic City Expressway. Jersey Central Power & Light and Atlantic City Electric crews are preparing for possible outages as winds peak near midnight.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations, patio furniture, and trash bins. Boaters should remain in port as northeast winds will create dangerous conditions on the Atlantic coastal waters and back bays through Monday morning.
Winds will gradually ease after sunrise Monday, with improving conditions and sunshine returning by Tuesday.
