Philadelphia, Pa. – A quiet stretch of weather continues into Sunday across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, but beachgoers will face a heightened danger in the surf zone. The National Weather Service warns of a high risk for rip currents along all beaches in New Jersey and Delaware on Sunday, making swimming dangerous despite seasonable air temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, overnight lows will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s across much of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Skies will start out mostly cloudy Sunday, before clearing through the afternoon. Highs are expected to climb into the mid-60s to low 70s inland, with slightly cooler conditions at the coast.
Inland communities like Trenton, Allentown, and Wilmington can expect comfortable conditions suitable for outdoor plans. However, those headed toward the shore are urged to use caution. Officials stress that rip currents are strongest near jetties and piers and can pull even strong swimmers out to sea. Lifeguards may not be on duty at many beaches this early in the season.
Residents are advised to avoid entering the ocean and instead enjoy the safer areas of the beach. The rip current risk is expected to remain elevated through Sunday evening.
