Newark, New Jersey – Roads across northeast New Jersey could become impassable by late Sunday afternoon as blizzard conditions develop with up to 22 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 50 mph through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday for Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Union counties. The heaviest snow and strongest winds are expected Sunday night into Monday.

Forecasters call for 18 to 22 inches of accumulation, with snowfall rates intensifying overnight. Winds gusting to 50 mph will create widespread blowing snow and visibility below a quarter mile, producing prolonged whiteout conditions along I-95, the Garden State Parkway, Route 3 and I-280.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds may down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered outages in communities including Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Hackensack. Both the Monday morning and evening commutes face major disruption, and NJ Transit delays are likely.

Officials urge residents to avoid all non-emergency travel, prepare a winter survival kit if driving is unavoidable and monitor state DOT updates. Blizzard conditions will continue through Monday afternoon before gradually easing after 6 p.m., though drifting snow may persist into Monday night.
