Laconia, N.H. – A 73-year-old Laconia woman died Monday evening after what authorities said was a possible drowning at Opechee Bay.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, Marine Patrol officers were notified at 7:11 p.m. Monday about a swimmer in distress. The victim was later identified as Bonita Johnston, 73, of Laconia.

Witnesses told investigators Johnston was last seen swimming alone near Lakeview Estates Beach around 7 p.m. A few minutes later, several people reportedly spotted her floating face down in the water. Two bystanders pulled her from the bay and attempted lifesaving measures until first responders arrived.

Johnston was transported to Concord Hospital – Laconia, where she was pronounced dead. Police said an autopsy determined Johnston suffered a medical event before drowning.

Marine Patrol was assisted at the scene by Laconia police and fire departments.

Authorities are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian at (603) 293-2037 or by email at Nicholas.M.Haroutunian@dos.nh.gov.
