Tilton, N.H. – A Vermont truck driver was killed early Friday morning when his tractor-trailer veered off Interstate 93 southbound in Tilton, crashing into the Winnipesaukee River.

According to New Hampshire State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:52 a.m. near mile marker 57. Troopers say the driver, identified as Benjamin A. Willson, 48, of Granby, Vt., was operating a 2025 Black Western Star tractor with a 2017 Blue Manac trailer when he allegedly failed to navigate a curve. The truck reportedly broke through the center median guardrail, crossed the median and embankment, passed over railroad tracks, and overturned into the river.

Emergency responders from the Tilton-Northfield Fire District, Tilton Police Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation worked at the scene for several hours. Heavy recovery equipment was used to lift the damaged trailer from the water. The left lane of I-93 southbound remained closed Friday morning, and officials warned of extended travel delays in the area.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused Willson to lose control of the vehicle. State Police said all aspects of the crash remain under investigation and urged anyone with information to contact Trooper Conor Davis.

Authorities confirmed that Willson was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.

Traffic was backed up for miles as crews worked to remove the wreckage and clear debris. Motorists traveling southbound on I-93 near Tilton were advised to expect significant delays throughout the day.
