Concord, NH – The New Hampshire State Police are alerting residents and visitors of an ongoing phone scam in which callers are impersonating state troopers and threatening arrest if the recipient does not make an immediate payment.
The State Police have received reports that during the calls, which have come from a 603-area code, scammers inform recipients they have an active warrant and must pay a fine or fee using Western Union or gift cards. Scammers have used the names of actual NHSP employees and locations, and sometimes have personal information regarding the recipient. Information from online public databases, including the New Hampshire Sex Offender Registry, has also been used in this scam.
According to the New Hampshire State Police, they never solicit payment of fines or fees over the phone and urge the public to remain vigilant for scams. Anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be a member of the New Hampshire State Police who requests payment should not send money or engage with the caller.
Anyone who has been a victim of this scam is encouraged to file a police report with their local law enforcement agency. The State Police advise the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls and to verify the identity of the caller before providing any personal information.
