Durham, NH – A multi-town police pursuit on the New Hampshire seacoast ended late Saturday night after a prolonged standoff on Route 4, authorities said. The incident prompted major traffic disruptions and drew response units from several area departments.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, the chase began around 9:42 p.m. Saturday after Troopers received a “be on the lookout” alert for a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 connected to an ongoing investigation in Belmont. Troopers located the vehicle in Strafford and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly fled, initiating a pursuit through multiple communities.

During the chase, a minor passenger was briefly inside the truck but was safely let out in Somersworth, police said. The child was not injured and was brought to a family member while the pursuit continued.

State Police reported using tire-deflation devices several times before the truck eventually stopped on Route 4 in Durham. However, the driver allegedly refused to exit the vehicle, forcing authorities to close the roadway as negotiations stretched into a multi-hour standoff.

Ultimately, the driver was taken into custody and identified as Scott E. Newcomb, 55, of Belmont. He was later transferred to the custody of Belmont Police for an unrelated investigation. Newcomb will be charged by State Police with kidnapping, reckless conduct, and disobeying an officer in connection with the pursuit and standoff.

Multiple agencies from Durham, Belmont, Somersworth, Strafford, Dover, and regional fire/EMS units assisted in the incident.

A court date has not yet been set, and booking information is currently unavailable. Police urge anyone with information to contact Trooper First Class Nathan J. Sleight at Nathan.J.Sleight@dos.nh.gov.
