Concord, NH – Law enforcement across New Hampshire is stepping up patrols over Labor Day weekend as part of a statewide crackdown on impaired driving.

According to the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety (NHOHS), state, county and local agencies are conducting DUI saturation patrols beginning Friday and continuing through Monday, Sept. 1. The campaign is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative, which began Aug. 13.

Officials said Labor Day weekend is among the busiest travel periods of the year. Data from the state Department of Transportation show nine people were killed in holiday crashes between 2020 and 2023. During the 2022 Labor Day weekend alone, five lives were lost in alcohol-related crashes.

This year, 40 people have already been arrested during enforcement operations tied to the holiday period, the NHOHS reported. Arrests included driving under the influence, reckless driving, speeding, drug possession and other violations.

New Hampshire State Police Lt. Chris Storm urged drivers to make safe choices. “If you need to get home, make a plan to get there safely by using a taxi or rideshare app,” Storm said. “Putting your life and others’ lives at risk is not worth it.”

Authorities stressed that driving impaired carries serious consequences in New Hampshire. A DWI conviction can cost drivers more than $10,000 in fines and fees, along with possible jail time and license loss.

The NHOHS thanked law enforcement agencies participating in the effort and encouraged residents to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 with a vehicle description, license plate and location.
