Hampton Falls, NH – Commuters and late-night drivers on I-95 in New Hampshire saw flashing lights Monday night after a high-speed pursuit that ended near Exit 3 and led to the arrest of a California man, authorities said.
According to New Hampshire State Police, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2025, when Trooper Patrick Vetter clocked a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu at 98 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-95 northbound in Hampton Falls. When Vetter attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit toward Portsmouth.
Police said Sgt. Gary Wood Jr. successfully deployed tire deflation devices in Portsmouth. At least one tire deflated as the Malibu continued a short distance before stopping near Exit 3, where the driver was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
The suspect was identified as Gongping Cheng, 39, of Monterey Park, California. During the investigation, troopers allegedly found several fake driver’s licenses from multiple states bearing numerous false identities, police said.
Cheng faces four felony counts of forgery; 16 misdemeanor counts related to driver’s license prohibitions; and additional misdemeanor counts of disobeying an officer, reckless conduct, and resisting arrest or detention, as well as a violation-level reckless operation charge. He was held in preventive detention pending arraignment in Portsmouth District Court on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Patrick Vetter at patrick.r.vetter@dos.nh.gov.
Areas impacted: Hampton Falls and Portsmouth in Rockingham County along the Seacoast region of New Hampshire, near the Boston metro corridor via I-95.
