Concord, NH – A developing winter storm pattern threatens to dump heavy snow across New Hampshire from November 28–30, potentially snarling Black Friday travel and outdoor plans across the Granite State. Bitter Arctic air arriving behind Thanksgiving’s cold front will set the stage for accumulating snow, especially in central and northern areas.
According to the National Weather Service office in Gray, ME, a moderate risk of heavy snow is in place for northern New England late this week as strong northwest flow and lake-enhanced moisture interact over the region. Snow is likely to begin late Thanksgiving night and continue through Friday, with totals ranging from 3–6 inches south of the Lakes Region to 6–10 inches in the White Mountains and North Country. Winds gusting up to 35 mph may cause reduced visibility and blowing snow through Saturday morning.
According to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, hazardous travel is expected along I-93 north of Concord, U.S. 302 through Crawford Notch, and Route 16 toward Mount Washington Valley. Travelers returning home or venturing out for Black Friday sales should allow extra time and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and icy road surfaces.
Cold, dry air will settle in Sunday, with morning lows in the teens and single digits in the north. Residents should take precautions to protect pets, pipes, and vehicles as wind chills drop below zero at higher elevations.
