PORTLAND, ME – A widespread Winter Storm Warning is in effect across much of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and parts of Eastern New York and Western Massachusetts, with heavy snow expected to create extremely dangerous travel conditions for the Tuesday evening commute.
Across portions of south central, southwest, and western Maine and much of New Hampshire, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 AM EST Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service Gray ME, these regions can expect additional snow accumulations between 4 and 6 inches, for a storm total of 6 to 9 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Coastal areas of Maine and southern New Hampshire may see additional accumulations of 4 to 7 inches for a storm total of 4 to 8 inches. The heavy, wet snow may cause weighted tree limbs, leading to snapped branches and isolated power outages. Periods of moderate and heavy snow combined with low visibility are the biggest hazards.
Further north, the National Weather Service Caribou ME has a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 AM EST Wednesday for Coastal DownEast, Interior DownEast, and Penobscot Valley Maine. These areas are forecast to see additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches. Heavy and wet snow may result in isolated power outages, especially near the coast.
In Southern New England and New York:
- Vermont: Central and Southern Vermont remain under a Winter Storm Warning until 1 AM EST Wednesday. The National Weather Service Burlington VT forecasts additional snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches for a storm total of 5 to 9 inches.
- New York and Western Massachusetts: Portions of Western Massachusetts and East Central/Eastern New York are under a Winter Storm Warning until 1 AM EST Wednesday. The National Weather Service Albany NY expects additional snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches.
The hazardous conditions across all regions are expected to impact the Tuesday evening commute. Officials strongly advise delaying all travel if possible, and for those who must drive, to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle.
