Boston, MA – A combination of dry air and gusty winds will rapidly increase the risk of brush fires across southern New England during the day Sunday, especially in areas where snow has already melted.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Boston and Albany, relative humidity levels will drop to between 30% and 40% by Sunday afternoon, while southwest wind gusts reach 25 to 30 mph across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and 20 to 25 mph in Connecticut. These conditions create an environment where fires can start easily and spread quickly.

Cities including Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Providence, Hartford, and New Haven are all under elevated fire weather risk. The threat is highest in dry fields, wooded areas, and regions that have not seen significant rainfall in recent days. Berkshire County and Litchfield County will also see similar conditions, particularly in areas now free of snowpack.

Residents are urged to avoid open burning and use caution with cigarettes, grills, and any equipment that could spark flames. Even small ignition sources could lead to fast-moving brush fires under these conditions.

Winds will ease and humidity levels recover Sunday night, lowering the immediate risk, but continued dry patterns could keep fire concerns elevated into early next week.
