PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A wet Columbus Day stretch is finally easing across Rhode Island, but slick roads and lingering fog could slow the Tuesday morning commute. After a damp holiday, drier air and cooler temperatures will settle in by midweek, signaling a welcome return to classic fall weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, steady rain will wind down early Tuesday as a coastal low pulls away. Drivers along I-95, Route 146, and I-195 should plan for reduced visibility and ponding during the early morning hours. Rainfall totals between one and two inches have already soaked much of Providence County and nearby coastal towns.

By Tuesday afternoon, drier skies and light north winds will bring improving conditions, though patchy fog may linger in low-lying areas. Temperatures will hover near 60°F before dipping into the upper 40s Tuesday night. The NWS notes that high pressure building from the northwest will deliver mostly sunny skies Wednesday and Thursday, with daytime highs climbing into the low 60s.

Residents can expect a stretch of bright, breezy, and comfortably cool days—ideal for mid-October leaf peeping, pumpkin patch visits, or school field trips. With drier air moving in, the risk of slick roads and travel delays should ease.

Locals are encouraged to check storm drains for debris and keep headlights on during early travel hours. The fall chill will stay mild for now, but cooler nights later in the week could hint at the season’s first frost chances inland.
