BANGOR, Maine – A widespread Frost Advisory stretches across much of New England overnight, signaling the first true fall chill of the season. Temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 20s and low 30s early Saturday, threatening late-season gardens and outdoor plants from Maine to Vermont and eastern New York.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Caribou, Gray, Burlington, and Albany, advisories cover regions including Bangor, Augusta, Montpelier, Glens Falls, and Brattleboro. The coldest readings are expected in sheltered inland valleys between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. EDT Saturday, when calm winds and clear skies will allow rapid cooling.

In Maine’s Penobscot and Kennebec counties, temperatures could fall as low as 28 degrees, prompting warnings for growers and homeowners to cover or bring in sensitive plants. Central and western portions of Vermont and New York may see frost formation even where readings hold near 33 to 36 degrees.

Local officials urge residents to take precautions now—cover tender vegetation, disconnect outdoor hoses, and prepare for a chilly start to the weekend. While this frost marks a seasonal milestone, forecasters expect daytime highs to rebound into the 50s and 60s by Saturday afternoon, offering a brief warmup before another cool night Sunday.

Drivers on I-95 in Maine and I-87 in New York should also watch for early-morning patchy fog and slick bridges before sunrise.
