Boston, Mass. – A powerful bomb cyclone is hammering New England tonight with relentless, wind-driven snow, prompting widespread travel restrictions and urgent warnings for residents to protect their health. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly overnight and remain dangerous through Monday as heavy snow and strong winds grip the region from Connecticut to Maine.

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings blanket much of southern and central New England, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, with winter storm warnings extending into New Hampshire and Maine. Heavy snow bands and powerful wind gusts will reduce visibility to near zero at times, creating hazardous conditions on major roadways such as Interstate 90, Interstate 95 and Interstate 93. State officials across the region are urging emergency-only travel as plows struggle to keep pace.

Beyond dangerous roads, the weight of the snow poses a serious health concern. This storm is producing dense, moisture-packed snow that is far heavier than typical powder. The added strain increases the risk of downed trees and power lines from Boston to Providence and into Hartford and Portland.

Health officials warn that shoveling heavy snow can place sudden stress on the heart. Residents are urged to take frequent breaks, avoid lifting heavy loads and push snow whenever possible. Older adults and anyone with underlying medical conditions should avoid clearing snow alone or seek assistance.

If travel becomes unavoidable, officials recommend carrying a winter emergency kit and remaining inside your vehicle if stranded. Snow and strong winds will peak Monday before gradually easing into Tuesday, though additional advisories may follow.
