Portland, ME – After last night’s dazzling display, New England residents could see another round of Northern Lights tonight as a powerful solar storm remains active across the northern hemisphere. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center continues to monitor a G3–G4-level geomagnetic storm, capable of pushing auroral visibility well into the northern U.S. — including Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Weather forecasts across much of the region show partly clear skies early this evening, especially north of the White Mountains and across interior Maine and Vermont. The best viewing window will be from sunset through midnight, facing north and away from city lights.

The same solar activity that produced vivid auroras from Texas to New England earlier this week remains strong, with another solar flare expected to enhance visibility tonight.

Residents in southern New England, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, may have a smaller window of opportunity as cloud cover increases later this evening.

To improve your chances, find a dark, open location, allow your eyes to adjust, and use your smartphone’s night mode — cameras often pick up more color than the naked eye.

If conditions hold, tonight could bring another chance to witness the Aurora Borealis over New England — a spectacle rarely visible this far south.
