Albany, N.Y. – A powerful early December storm is set to sweep across the Northeast beginning late Monday night, bringing the first widespread snow of the season to much of New England, eastern New York, and northern Pennsylvania. By Tuesday morning, travel could become treacherous with snowfall rates over an inch per hour expected in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service, Winter Storm Watches extend from central Pennsylvania through the Hudson Valley, Berkshires, and Green Mountains, reaching as far north as Bangor, Maine. Snow totals could exceed 7 inches across Vermont and western Massachusetts, with coastal Maine seeing as much as 10 inches by Wednesday morning. Strong north winds may cause blowing and drifting snow Tuesday night, further reducing visibility.
Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel, especially during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Bridges and overpasses will likely ice first, and plow crews are preparing for rapid accumulations across the I-81, I-87, and I-90 corridors.
The heaviest snow is expected to taper by early Wednesday, though lingering flurries may continue through midweek. Additional advisories may be issued if snow bands intensify overnight Tuesday.
