Boston, MA – A multi-round winter weather pattern is expected across Massachusetts and southern New England over the next 48 hours, bringing light snow first, followed by a risk of freezing rain that could impact travel.
According to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office, light snow develops Monday afternoon, generally between 1 and 3 p.m. in western Massachusetts and closer to 3 to 6 p.m. across eastern New England, including the Boston metro area. Snow is expected to taper off before midnight, but could still impact the evening commute, especially west of Interstate 95.
Snow accumulations are forecast to remain light, with 1 to 2 inches possible, though areas south of the Massachusetts Pike may see only a coating to one inch. Forecasters also note a brief period of freezing rain is possible late Monday night across Rhode Island, northern Connecticut, and southeastern Massachusetts after 10 p.m.
Attention then turns to Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, when freezing rain is expected to redevelop, particularly across higher elevations of central and western Massachusetts. Light freezing rain could begin after 7 p.m. Tuesday, changing to plain rain overnight near the coast but lingering longer in elevated inland areas.
The National Weather Service warns that slippery roads and hazardous travel are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, especially in hill towns and higher terrain where surface temperatures remain near freezing.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, use caution on bridges and untreated roads, and stay updated as conditions evolve.
