Boston, Massachusetts – A noticeable shift toward colder weather is set to arrive across New England this weekend as a fresh surge of Arctic air pushes east, ending the recent stretch of milder January conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a broad cooldown will begin spreading across the eastern half of the United States, with New England feeling the brunt of the colder air by Saturday night and Sunday. Daytime high temperatures across much of the region are expected to drop into the 20s and lower 30s, with some interior locations struggling to climb above freezing.

In Boston, highs that have recently hovered near or above seasonal norms will fall back into the low 30s by Sunday, with overnight lows dipping into the teens. Farther north across New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, daytime temperatures may remain in the 20s, while nighttime lows slide into the single digits in colder valleys.

The weekend cooldown will also bring brisk northwest winds, making it feel even colder, especially during the morning and evening hours. While widespread snow is not the primary concern at this time, the colder air raises the risk of refreezing on untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots after sunset.

Residents are urged to prepare for winterlike conditions to return, including dressing in layers, protecting exposed pipes, and allowing extra time for travel during the early morning hours. The colder pattern is expected to persist into early next week, with additional pushes of cold air possible as January continues.
