Boston, Mass. – Clear skies may give Massachusetts residents a rare view of the Northern Lights tonight, kicking off meteorological fall with a glow. The best chance to spot the aurora comes late Monday night into early Tuesday, when skies stay mostly clear and winds remain calm. Drivers heading along I-90 or coastal routes should keep eyes on the road, as sudden flashes of color may distract motorists.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a strong solar storm triggered by a coronal mass ejection could spark auroras as far south as New England. Skies over Boston and eastern Massachusetts look favorable for viewing through early Tuesday morning, though visibility depends on local light pollution. Western and northern suburbs with darker skies may offer the best chance.

Tuesday brings calmer conditions with sun and highs near 74, followed by a warmer stretch midweek. Boston should see highs near 81 Wednesday and 80 Thursday before clouds and showers return Friday. Warm southerly winds will push gusts near 20 mph late in the week, creating minor travel delays on bridges and exposed highways.

Residents planning to catch the aurora should step away from city lights and look north after midnight. Those commuting early Tuesday can expect smooth travel with no weather disruptions.

Conditions turn unsettled Friday into Saturday with scattered showers, but most of the workweek remains dry.
