Boston, MA – New England is setting up for a widespread wintry weather pattern from December 18–24, with NOAA’s long-range outlook showing below-normal temperatures in the northern tier and near-normal temperatures farther south. When paired with above-normal precipitation across the region, this pattern increases the likelihood of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and multiple travel disruptions as Christmas Eve approaches.

According to NOAA, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont fall deepest into the below-normal temperature zone, favoring accumulating snow throughout the period. Northern regions—such as Caribou (ME), Berlin (NH), and the Northeast Kingdom (VT)—may see near-daily snow chances, with moderate totals possible between December 20–23.

Central and southern Vermont and New Hampshire, along with western Massachusetts, may see occasional rain–snow mixes early in storms, especially December 19–21, before colder air shifts precipitation back to snow.

Farther south, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island sit in a near-normal temperature band where mixed precipitation becomes more likely. Areas from Worcester to Hartford to Providence may see sleet or freezing drizzle, especially during overnight hours when temperatures dip below freezing.

Coastal New England—from Boston to Cape Cod to Newport, RI—leans warmer early in the period, favoring rain, but colder air returning by December 22–24 may allow precipitation to end as wet snow during peak Christmas travel.

Major regional highways—including I-95, I-91, I-89, I-93, I-84, and the Mass Pike—could experience slick roads, low visibility, and slowdowns, especially from December 21 through Christmas Eve.
