Maine–New Hampshire – Snow piles up fast this morning across southern and central Maine, blanketing roads and slowing early commutes as flakes swirl through gray skies. By evening, plows will be working overtime as the region braces for 6 to 9 inches of accumulation before tapering early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday, covering much of southern Maine and southern New Hampshire. Snow will be heavy at times, changing to a slushy rain mix near the coast before colder air sweeps back in tonight.

Travel conditions will deteriorate quickly this afternoon, especially on I-95, Route 302, and Route 1, where visibility could drop to near zero in bursts of heavier snow. Commuters should plan extra time, keep distance from plows, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours between noon and 9 p.m.

Temperatures hover near freezing today before plunging into the low 20s overnight. Any melted snow could refreeze, creating black ice on untreated surfaces Wednesday morning.

By Thursday, skies clear but an arctic chill moves in — highs near 37°F Thursday drop into the teens by nightfall. The weekend looks brighter yet cold, with highs in the 20s and 30s and another weak system hinting at flurries by Sunday.

Plan ahead, dress in layers, and keep a shovel handy — early December’s winter grip has arrived.
