Boston, Massachusetts – A broad late-January winter pattern could bring accumulating snow and renewed travel disruptions across much of New England, with impacts possible from coastal cities to interior valleys and mountain communities.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of New England is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling an increased likelihood of one or more organized winter systems affecting the region. The risk spans Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

In southern New England, including the Boston and Providence metro areas, colder-than-normal temperatures increase confidence that precipitation falls mainly as snow rather than rain. That could lead to slick conditions along Interstates 90, 93, and 95, as well as delays on commuter rail and local road networks during heavier snowfall.

Across interior New England, including New Hampshire and Vermont, elevation-driven enhancement may allow snow to accumulate efficiently over multiple rounds. Northern areas of Maine could see more persistent snow, with impacts on long stretches of I-95 and rural highways.

State transportation agencies across New England urge residents to monitor road conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and prepare vehicles with winter safety supplies. With cold air expected to persist, snow that falls is likely to linger between systems.

More detailed outlooks and possible winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer timing and impacts becoming available by early next week.
