Boston, MA – A prolonged burst of oppressive heat will grip much of southern New England starting Sunday, with heat index values approaching 100° and dangerous conditions expected from Hartford to Portland.
According to the National Weather Service, heat advisories are now in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday across parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and western Maine. The worst conditions are forecast Monday afternoon, when humidity will drive “feels like” temperatures above 95° in most urban areas.
Cities under the advisory include Boston, Worcester, Hartford, Providence, Manchester, and Portland. The high heat index poses a risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, children, and those without access to air conditioning. Power grids may also see increased strain due to elevated cooling demand.
Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Air-conditioned public cooling centers are expected to open in several communities by Sunday morning.
This could be the hottest stretch of the summer so far, with temperatures running 10–15 degrees above average. The advisory may be extended if conditions persist beyond Monday.
