Portland, Maine – Night skies across northern New England could glow with rare color within the next 24 hours as a solar storm pushes the northern lights into parts of Maine and New Hampshire.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a G2-level geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect through Saturday, fueled by incoming solar eruptions and high-speed solar wind. These conditions can shift aurora visibility farther south, making it possible for residents in both Maine and New Hampshire to catch glimpses of the lights.

The best opportunity comes during the darkest overnight hours, especially in northern Maine, the White Mountains, and rural areas away from city light pollution. Clear breaks in cloud cover will be key, as visibility may change quickly depending on sky conditions.

Impacts are expected to remain minimal, though brief disruptions to GPS or minor power fluctuations cannot be ruled out. For most, the event offers a viewing opportunity rather than a hazard.

Geomagnetic activity may continue into early Saturday before weakening. Additional updates are possible as solar conditions evolve, with skywatchers advised to check conditions before heading out.
