Boston, Massachusetts – Blizzard conditions will continue to snarl travel across New England through the overnight hours, but the powerful nor’easter driving the storm is now pulling away from the region.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, the late-February system will steadily weaken as it tracks northeast, with snowfall rates dropping below 1 inch per hour after sunset and tapering off completely overnight. While new accumulation will slow, strong winds will keep visibility sharply reduced into early Tuesday.

The most significant impacts remain across eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, as well as coastal Rhode Island and portions of eastern Connecticut. Wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph are still possible through the night, blowing around heavy, wet snow and creating dangerous travel along I-95, I-93 and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Scattered to numerous power outages may continue, especially in southeastern Massachusetts where winds remain strongest.

Drivers are urged to avoid overnight travel, allow plow crews room to work and keep generators at least 20 feet from homes if electricity is lost. Residents should also use caution while shoveling dense snow.

Conditions will improve gradually after sunrise Tuesday as winds ease and visibility rebounds, though cleanup efforts will likely continue through the day.
