Boston, Massachusetts – A cooler pattern could provide welcome relief across New England during the final week of July, with forecasters favoring below-normal temperatures from July 26 through August 1 after weeks of persistent summer warmth across much of the country.

According to the National Weather Service and the Climate Prediction Center’s 8- to 14-day temperature outlook, New England has the highest probability in the eastern United States for temperatures to average below seasonal normals during the period. The outlook includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, where cooler-than-average conditions are favored over the seven-day period.

While the outlook does not predict specific daily high or low temperatures, it signals an increased likelihood that afternoon highs will remain below what is typical for late July. The cooler trend could reduce heat stress, lower air conditioning demand, and provide more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities compared with much of the central and western United States, where above-normal temperatures are expected to dominate.

Residents should remember that below-normal temperatures do not eliminate the possibility of warm afternoons or isolated heat events. Typical summertime weather, including scattered showers and thunderstorms, can still occur depending on individual storm systems moving through the region.

The Climate Prediction Center will continue refining the outlook as the period approaches. Additional forecast updates throughout the week will provide more detail on temperatures, rainfall, and any potential weather hazards heading into the final days of July and the start of August.
