Boston, MA – Sweltering summer heat is gripping the entire Eastern Seaboard, from New England to the Mid-Atlantic, with heat index values soaring past 100°F and official advisories in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Cities including Boston, Nashua, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh are bracing for dangerous conditions as the heat index climbs as high as 108°F.
According to the National Weather Service, Heat Advisories remain active across Strafford, Rockingham, and Hillsborough Counties in New Hampshire, much of Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Central and coastal regions—including Portsmouth, Baltimore, Richmond, Raleigh, and Virginia Beach—are under alerts due to hot temperatures and oppressive humidity expected to peak between 4 and 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Residents should expect slow travel and increased risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for those without air conditioning or who must work outdoors. Local officials urge everyone to drink extra water, limit outdoor activities, check on vulnerable neighbors, and use cooling centers where available. In several areas, road crews and emergency services are on standby for heat-related calls, and school and camp programs may be shortened or canceled.
This heat wave follows a summer of record-breaking temperatures along the I-95 corridor and comes as utility companies report high power demand. The National Weather Service warns that more advisories could be issued if extreme conditions persist into Wednesday.
