New York, New York – Drivers along the I-95 corridor from Virginia to Maine could face rapidly deteriorating travel conditions by Sunday afternoon as a strengthening winter storm targets the Mid-Atlantic and New England with snowfall rates topping 1 inch per hour and totals exceeding a foot in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center, confidence continues to increase that heavy snow and gusty winds will develop Sunday and intensify into Sunday night, with the highest impact zone stretching from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore through Philadelphia, New York City and into Boston. The agency warns of hazardous travel and infrastructure impacts through at least early Tuesday.

Snow is expected to overspread northern Virginia and Maryland by midday Sunday, quickly covering I-95, I-66 and I-270. By late Sunday evening, heavy bands may pivot across eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, creating near-whiteout conditions along I-76, the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. In New York City and Long Island, snowfall totals could surpass 12 inches where the heaviest bands stall, increasing the risk of scattered power outages.

Farther north, Connecticut, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts could see 8 to 14 inches by early Monday, with I-90 and I-95 becoming snow-covered and slick. Gusts along the coast may exceed 40 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility under a quarter mile at times.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel Sunday night, charge electronic devices and prepare for potential delays or cancellations into Monday morning. Additional advisories and localized warnings are likely as the storm track becomes clearer, with impacts lingering into early next week.
